Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean Commends Egypt and International Partners for Their Efforts in Creating the Conditions for the Washington–Tehran Agreement
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM), under the presidency of MP Mohamed Abou El-Enein, welcomed the agreement reached between the United States and Iran to immediately and permanently end all military operations across various fronts, including Lebanon, and to ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, considering it an important step toward promoting peace, reducing regional tensions, and strengthening global economic stability, with positive implications for the peoples of the region and the world.
The Assembly affirmed that dialogue, diplomacy, and adherence to the principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations represent the best path for resolving conflicts and achieving sustainable peace, in a manner that preserves state sovereignty, safeguards the interests of peoples, and spares them the devastation of war and further humanitarian suffering.
The Assembly stressed the importance of this agreement serving as a starting point for a new phase of de-escalation and confidence-building, contributing to security and stability in the region and creating a favorable environment for advancing diplomatic efforts aimed at addressing the various unresolved regional issues.
Foremost among these is the Palestinian issue, which has always been and remains at the core of the conflict in the Middle East and the key to achieving genuine regional stability. This requires renewed international focus on the tragedy faced by the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank, and the exertion of every effort to complete the implementation of the remaining provisions of the first phase of President Trump’s plan, while launching the second phase, with the ultimate goal of achieving a comprehensive, just, and lasting settlement of the Palestinian issue based on the two-state solution, ensuring the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, living side by side with Israel in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions.
The Assembly also commended the sincere and responsible efforts undertaken by Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Qatar, and other regional and international partners, which contributed to de-escalation, narrowing differences, and creating the conditions that led to this agreement. It called on all parties to fully commit to its implementation and build upon it to address outstanding issues through dialogue and peaceful means, with the aim of reaching a lasting agreement that strengthens regional and international peace and stability.
The Assembly further emphasized the necessity of adhering to a cessation of military operations in Lebanon and ensuring Israel’s withdrawal from all Lebanese territories, thereby enabling Lebanese state institutions to exercise sovereignty over the entirety of their territory, guaranteeing that arms remain exclusively in the hands of the state, strengthening stability, and preserving Lebanon’s unity and territorial integrity.
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean renewed its firm commitment to supporting all initiatives aimed at consolidating peace and stability. It also affirmed its readiness to continue its role in promoting parliamentary diplomacy and building bridges of dialogue and mutual understanding among peoples and nations, based on its conviction that peace is the foundation upon which sustainable development, shared prosperity, and cooperation in the Mediterranean region and throughout the world must be built.
