The Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean, chaired by MP Mohamed Abou El-Enein, issued a statement expressing deep concern over the serious military escalation in the Middle East, highlighting the risks of widening the conflict and the potential for the region to slide into a state of widespread chaos, which would have catastrophic consequences for regional and international security, stability, and peace.
The statement emphasized that a military approach cannot resolve crises but rather risks plunging the region into a cycle of chaos and instability. The only way to ensure security and stability is through commitment to diplomacy and dialogue to resolve the current crises.
It strongly condemned Iran’s targeting of Arab countries’ territories and violations of their sovereignty, noting the severe risks this poses to regional security.
The Assembly stressed the necessity of respecting the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity of these countries, adhering to principles of good neighborliness, and fully complying with international law and the United Nations Charter.
It called on all parties to exercise the utmost restraint and prioritize dialogue and diplomacy to prevent the expansion of the conflict and avoid plunging the region into an uncontrollable spiral of escalation.
Finally, it urged parliaments, governments, and international organizations to assume their political, ethical, and historical responsibilities and take urgent action to immediately halt all hostilities and return to serious and responsible paths of dialogue and negotiation.
