As part of his participation at the head of an Egyptian parliamentary delegation in the 9th Summit of Presidents of Parliaments of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean and the 18th Plenary Session of the Assembly held in Spain, Mohamed Abou El-Enein, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, assumed the presidency of the Egyptian Parliament at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean.
Abou El-Enein: Egypt Has Worked to Achieve Growth and Prosperity for the Peoples of the Region
At the beginning of his speech, Mohamed Abou El-Enein, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, expressed his thanks to the Spanish Parliament for its tireless efforts during Spain’s presidency of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean.
He affirmed that Egypt has strongly sought, since its participation in founding the Union for the Mediterranean, to consolidate the concepts of shared ownership and collective responsibility in order to achieve growth and prosperity for the peoples of the region, through its effective and influential presence in all the forums and activities of the Union for the Mediterranean.
He added that the Egyptian Parliamentary Group has been keen to actively participate in the activities of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean since its establishment, considering it an important channel for communication, dialogue, and exchange of visions among parliamentarians representing the peoples of the Union for the Mediterranean.
Abou El-Enein Condemns the Aggression on Gaza
During his speech, the Deputy Speaker of the Egyptian House of Representatives pointed out that, despite the many achievements made by the Union for the Mediterranean in terms of regional development programs and projects aimed at achieving integration among the member states, the critical phase the Middle East is going through as a result of the brutal aggression of the Israeli occupation against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip — which amounts to genocide — as well as Israel’s insistence on expanding the scope of the regional conflict, prevents the realization of the desired cooperation among our countries.
He stressed that there can be no genuine cooperation without establishing the foundations of a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, the cornerstone of which is the Palestinian people obtaining their inalienable legitimate rights to establish their independent state on their land along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions.
He affirmed that Egyptian diplomacy — both governmental and parliamentary — prioritizes the language of dialogue and cooperation as a main pillar of its efforts aimed at supporting regional security and stability.
Abou El-Enein: The Egyptian Parliament Assumes the Presidency Amid a Sensitive Phase in the Euro-Mediterranean Region.
In conclusion, Mohamed Abou El-Enein emphasized that the Egyptian Parliament assumes the presidency of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean at a delicate time for the Euro-Mediterranean region, which is witnessing challenges that threaten the security of its countries and undermine development efforts.
He stressed that this situation requires all of us to coordinate our activities and unite our efforts to confront these challenges.
The Assembly Condemns Israeli Violations in Gaza
At the conclusion of the meetings, members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean condemned the extensive Israeli practices and violations in the Gaza Strip, calling for the members of the Israeli government to be brought before the International Court, and affirming their support for Egypt’s firm positions on the Palestinian issue, especially regarding the rejection of the displacement of Palestinians and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions.
